Here at GP Associates, Inc., we want to help you keep your fiber optic network in the best possible condition so that you can enjoy optimal performance. In order to ensure that your cables are delivering the best performance, it’s necessary to test them from time to time. To do this, our team uses two tools: an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) and a power meter. In this article, we’ll go over more about what these tools do and how OTDR & power meter testing works.

OTDR & Power Meter in Knightdale, North Carolina

The OTDR & power meter are both necessary for fiber optic testing because they measure different things and give different results. The power meter measures the strength (power) of the optical signal. This tells our technicians if the fiber in question has been cut or damaged, as in those cases, some of the light will be wasted or lost between the source and the end of the cable. On the other hand, the OTDR allows us to measure the distance from the test point to the break in question, which in turn lets us locate the break itself and correct it. Broken or damaged cables will result in a loss of signal strength, as information won’t be able to travel along them, but fortunately our team has the right experience to find such breaks and mend them.

Our team is proud to serve the Knightdale, North Carolina community, and we want to help you keep your network in the best possible condition. If you are in need of OTDR & power meter testing, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
